River Torne - Pike

A beautifully marked specimen, typical of the River Torne pike.

Venue Type: Gravel Pits
Description: This is one of my favourite places to pike fish. It is little more than a land drain crossing the moorland to the east of Doncaster and connected to many other land drains at the intersection at Pilfrey bridge. At a maximum of 13 metres wide and often much narrower, it could easily be overlooked. However, plenty of anglers fishing for a variety of species can be found congregated around the few road bridges that cross its path. With an average depth of 4 to 5 feet, float ledgered tactics are my favourite method here and I always move swims every 30 minutes if I don't get any action. I also plan to cover more of the many miles of untouched water with a lure rod this summer.
Doncaster and District Angling Association control this stretch from Epworth Road Bridge to Pilfrey Bridge. Scunthorpe Police Angling Club control the fishing from the Tunnel Pits to Epworth Road Bridge. Scunthorpe AA have the stretch from Pilfrey Bridge, downstream to the River Trent.
